Eco-friendly Valentine's Day

With Valentines’ Day around the corner, why not make yours an eco-friendly day? Here are some ideas to impress your partner from dawn till dusk!

Breakfast in bed. Nothing like waking up to a cup of freshly brewed organic coffee and a kiss, followed by a full English Breakfast, using free-range bacon and eggs fresh from the farm, some freshly baked sourdough bread and some organic tomatoes.

Valentine’s gift. Surprising your partner with a gift is always a winner on Valentine’s Day, but instead of buying freshly cut flowers, why not buy a potted plant, or plant a tree? Or why not order an ethical gift box to be delivered to your partner at work?

Relax. After work, why not set the scene with some natural candles and treat your loved one to a relaxing massage using some lovely essential oils and natural skincare products?

Eat in. While your partner is still on cloud nine after their massage pour them a glass of organic/vegan sparkling wine whilst you get cooking! Spoil them with only the best organic vegetables, free-range meat or prepare a vegan feast!

Pop the question? Now is the time to pop the Big Question with a beautiful ethically sourced ring or just show your love with a stunning reclaimed silver bracelet.

Snuggle up. Watch a romantic movie together and tuck into some organic or Fairtrade chocolates to finish off a perfect day!

ethical

ˈɛθɪk(ə)l
adjective

  1. Relating to moral principles or the branch of knowledge dealing with these.
  2. Morally good or correct.
  3. Avoiding activities or organizations that do harm to people or the environment.

“Ethical” – what does it mean to you? To us here at Ethical Apothecary, it means so much we decided to build our entire business brand on it.

Ethical to us means doing the right thing by our fellow humans, animals and the planet we all live on; we do everything in our power to ensure that, while the products we sell may have maximum impact on you, your skin, or your health, they have minimum impact on the earth.

We are staunch advocates for clean beauty, which to us means so much more than simply recognising and understanding the ingredients in your make-up bag and reducing the chemicals that go on your skin. Clean beauty should also mean a clean conscience when it comes to animal testing and the environment.

That’s why we will only ever stock natural, botanically-sourced products from cruelty-free brands in the Ethical Apothecary store.

Clean beauty for all

Many of the products you’ll find in the Ethical Apothecary shop are vegan brands, many are organic skincare brands, but all of our products embrace the clean beauty ethos.

This is because we believe clean beauty is a concept that should be available to everyone, whether vegan or non-vegan, and whatever budget they may have. We should all be able to enjoy natural skincare and self-care without the nasties!

You’ll find every one of our product descriptions comes with a full list of ingredients, so you can see exactly what it is you’re putting on your skin and into your body, and we also make it clear which of our products are vegan, which are organic and which have plastic-free packaging.

Why choose vegan beauty products?

It may sound like a contradiction in terms, but vegan brands aren’t just for vegans.

Whether or not you choose to follow a wholly vegan lifestyle, as skincare consultants, we believe vegan beauty products can benefit everyone. And as a business, we believe it is our responsibility to be both environmentally and socially conscious.

The vegan brands available in the Ethical Apothecary store only include products that use pure, effective and safe ingredients.

In our experience – which, with more than 40 years between us in the beauty business, is extensive – the combination of all-natural antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and botanical extracts in vegan beauty products help rejuvenate skin and can really give you a healthy glow!

But don’t just take our word for it. Try the Ethical approach to self-care for yourself and you’ll see just what a difference it can make to your skin, your health and your life.

Dear Friends,

Thanks for joining us in our vision to create a kinder and fairer planet for all! We are very excited to finally launch the Livewell Directory, which we have been working on behind the scenes for the past 6 years.

To celebrate the launch of the Directory in the UK we are offering the first 1000 businesses a free 12-month listing! There are many other benefits to signing up with us as well, so if you are an ethical business in the UK and want to join the Directory then please register today! We are planning to launch in South Africa later this year, so if you are a South African business, then you can sign up to receive our launch alert.

Livewell Directory is the only UK Directory that endorses known certifications to ensure ethical standards. All listings on our directory are approved according to strict criteria within the Food, Retail and Wellbeing categories. You can view the Directory to find your local, ethical Food, Retail or Wellbeing business and look out for exclusive discounts for Livewell users!

The Directory is very close to our hearts and we hope that our community of like-minded people will grow and that together, we will make a difference by changing our shopping habits and becoming conscious consumers. Please sign up to our community newsletter where we will share news, blogs, tips, recipes and product reviews to promote healthy and sustainable living. Of course, listed businesses are also welcome to blog about issues close to their hearts and we will also welcome guest bloggers from the various certification bodies that we endorse.

Currently, we are a small team, but with a BIG vision and therefore we will need some reps to help us spread the word. Find out more about us, or contact us if you are interested in becoming part of our team. Livewell Directory is not just about us though, we also believe in sharing the love and helping other like-minded organisations and charities.  When we are fully established we plan to support three charities. One to help wildlife and the environment, one to support the welfare of farm animals in the UK and one which empowers young people to take charge of their lives in South Africa.

We would love to hear from you and to do so you can find us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or LinkedIn! Join in the conversation and share any ethical products you’ve found or amazing food at restaurants, cafes etc. If you’re a business and have found a great ethical supplier, please share this with us too. We will be sharing our listings with you, so we’re all helping each other celebrate ethical business and living, eating well! We have created two private Facebook groups, specifically for ethical businesses to network with each other. You can join the Livewell Pioneers UK, or the Livewell Pioneers South Africa and get talking!

Please share the love and help us grow!

Wahoo! It’s our eleventh birthday! We’ve come a long way baby…

It all began with a few innocent experiments in the kitchen.

Having discovered the potential breadth of the raw food diet, Linus, our founder and guiding chocolate Jedi-master, decided to explore just what was possible with raw cacao.

Inevitably there were a number of disasters before Linus found the path to true cacao wisdom, but with time, patience, and perseverance he slowly mastered the art. At which point he felt it was time to share his scrumptious creations with friends and family.

The response was overwhelming – the chocolate wasn’t just quite tasty, it was delicious, and people went wild for it.

Linus thought he might well be on to something.

That was when the serious experiments started: early starts, late finishes… Linus evolved into something of a mad scientist, but when he emerged from his chocolate laboratory he had the recipe for his chocolates and a shining glint in his eye.

That shining glint was what quickly became the Raw Chocolate Company. Founded in 2006, in a kitchen in Brighton, the Raw Chocolate Company now has numerous awards and is available across Europe and beyond! We now have our own purpose-built factory (our fourth in total), snug in the Sussex hills.

We have three product ranges: award winning Raw Chocolate Bars, Raw Chocolate Snacks and the Make Your Own range, which includes ingredients to make awesome smoothies, puddings, chocolate, shakes and more.

We don’t use any nasties in our chocolate, it’s all pure. Our Pitch Dark bar has just three ingredients: cacao, cacao butter and coconut sugar.

Our chocolate is:

  • Fairtrade
  • Vegan
  • Vegetarian
  • Soy-free
  • Gluten-free
  • Organic
  • Refined sugar-free
  • Additive free
  • Raw
  • Powered by Ecotricity
  • Unicorn friendly

We want to make chocolate that is as pure as possible. To that end, we do our best to source sun-dried and minimally heated cacao rather than roasted. Our cacao butter is cold pressed and our cacao powder is not chemically treated. We use coconut blossom sugar – rather than refined cane/beet sugar – with its extra nutrients and lower environmental impact. Overall, we’re trying to make a great tasting, luxurious chocolate treat, that makes you feel good, and is good for the growers and good for the environment too.

A few years ago, we were invited to pitch on Dragons’ Den. So off we popped to tame the dragons…they all loved it! In fact, Peter Jones said, “This is the best chocolate I’ve ever tasted in ten years of doing Dragons’ Den”. Deborah Meadon invested on the show, but after many, many, many meetings and discussions we decided to walk our separate paths.

We’ve won 6 Great Taste Gold Stars, been heralded as one of the most ‘disruptive’ companies in the UK (apparently this is a good thing) and have become a favourite of foodies, athletes, bloggers, vegans, chefs and chocoholics across Europe and beyond.

What’s next? We’re constantly working on new recipes and combinations and we’ll be releasing some later this year. We’re always looking for ideas and inspiration, so let us know if you discover something awesome!

We’re also looking to take the final steps to reducing our environmental impact – completely compostable and biodegradable packaging. This will be phased in over the next 24 months.

Keep up to date with all our goings on, offer codes, competitions and recipes – sign up to our mailing list.

We’ll send you a 15% off code for your first order when you complete the signup process!

Thanks for joining us on our journey!
